ClamAV is installed by default on their Linux EeePCs, but for the XP device, there s a selection of free ones, each with their supporters.

I ve used, at one time or another  -

Avast. -

ClamWin Clam AV for WinOS -

AntiVir -

And each have their good points and bad, while their comparative success rates at detection seems to much depend on the whims of those who test them.

Some auto-update and scan - this may not be a big deal if your EeePC is not your primary machine and always connected to the net.

I m not sure what their footprints on the hard drive would be, but I m sure digging around on the above sites would let you know the installed not downloaded size. I know I ve used ClamWin Portable part of the PortableApps collection on a 2 GB USB key along with some of the other PortableApp programs and all my docs

I m using the ClamAV that came on my Linux EeePC and currently using AVG on my Vista notebook, with apparent success.

Retail AV programs have a reputation for better detection rates, with Kapersky and nod32 often right up there Norton and McAfee seem to throw all sorts of cr p around the OS and may be vast on the EeePC while there is the drawback of  yearly subscriptions nothing like never owning the software you bought to retail products - a fee you may not believe worth it on a secondary computer.
